Haute & Bothered: Turning up the heat on summer city style

Trends. They’re here and then they’re gone. Lucky for you, I’m a fashion fiend and love staying on top of today’s faves. Liking them, however, is very different from executing them effectively and that’s where Little Black Blog BOSTON comes in. From hot temperatures to haute couture, here’s what’s rising in popularity among the fashionistas in Boston…

This summer there are a wide array of prints and pieces that are versatile enough for day-to-night and are quite a sight! From bright colors to sweet lace, there’s a trend here for every city girl with super style. Mix and match trends for a fashion forward approach and don’t forget to check out this season’s earlier favorites that are equally as relevant given the city’s sweltering track record.

Bold prints: Try Tribal!

Looking to make a statement with patterns this season? Atypical prints like geometric tribal designs are so haute right now and they’re not just for the weekend! Pairing loose tribal print tops with neutrals and blazers (see below) make this fierce look more office friendly and you appear more fashion forward. Also perfect to pair with wooden or earth-friendy accessories (like cork wedges or wooden bangles), this look is easily transferable from day to night!

Finally! The 9-to-5 look is appropriate for after hours without making you look like you’re trying too hard! Lucky for fashionistas everywhere, the high summer temperatures won’t last forever and when they start to subside, you’re going to want something sleek around your shoulders. Try this look out now by slinging them over jersey maxi dresses, partnering neutral versions with neon or pastel bottoms or softening a feminine-look of lace or sheer with this menswear-inspried piece.

Great lengths: “Max-out” in dresses & hi-low skirts

From long to short (and everything in between), hemlines are all over the place this season. With maxi dresses, you have the added benefit of an all-in-one ensemble, just add accessories. Hi-low skirts are scene-stealing assets for your closet; they show a little leg and a lot of style! Both can be complimented by adding coordinated sandal pumps, wedges or flat sandals and a very chic handbag or clutch.

Solid colors: Show you’re a “bright” girl!

This season strives to give every fashionista a colorful personality. From solid bright jeans in shades of peach, mellow yellow, mint and lavender to tailored blazers in hot pink, bright white, sand nautical red, think of your closet as your artists’ palette. Now is the time to try out a simple summer dress in a shade you would normally shy away from just this time, don’t be shy, be bold! I enjoy pairing new colors with both neutral and complimenting shades such as black bumps with a peach frock and dark amethyst jewels or bright yellow jeans with a white pocket tea and a royal blue cloth. Mix and match, its that easy!

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be anymore ways to stop traffic, two fabrics will catch your eye on the racks. That’s right, less is more this season and the two most popular textures come in layers of lace and sheer chiffon. Most popular are shorts, often with scalloped edges, that demonstrate the intricate designs of lacework and button-down sheer tops that entertain neutral or complimenting bandeaus and camisoles for show underneath. Whichever you chose, keep your other pieces simple so as not to detract from the attention these great textures deserve!
